Sequence of Activities:
Anticipatory Questions/Activity:
Have students ask each other various questions on how they celebrate the Christmas holidays? Does everyone have the same or similar traditions? Talk to the students about how they think people in other countries might celebrate?
Segment #1
Once the students have been thinking about holidays and talking about them together, start this lesson by introducing and then reading the book Holidays Around the World by: Alice Van Straalen. Make sure to show the pictures of the various cultures celebrating so it gives the students time to ask questions about the pictures.
Segment #2
Countries and cultures are different all over the world. Not everyone celebrates Christmas, and not everyone believes in Santa Claus or receives presents on Christmas. Many cultures celebrate holidays in December and January like our culture does, but as we are going to see today not everyone shares the same traditions.
Example Feedback: “What kind of traditions do your families have around the holidays? Example student response “ My family hangs Christmas lights” “ my family decorates a tree and buys lots of presents”
Segment #3
1.) Students will be put into a group of 3 and along with a classroom helper during small group instruction.
2.) Students will be required to find the answers to explore the filamentality hotlist to find answers to a list of questions.
3.) Students will be asked to recall information that they have learned about different holidays around the world.
Example: Remind students about the book Holidays Around the World that was read during large group instruction today.
Segment #4
  • Once broken up into groups, have the students visit the teacher made filamentality hotlist
  • From here the students will visit the various websites by clicking on the links, the answers to the questions will be found on these pages.
  • Once all of the students in the class have had a chance to answer the questions on the sheet provided, we will meet again in large group instruction and compare and contrast the answers that we found (some of the websites may have slightly different answers)
Example Feedback: Ask students “What was something that you found out about another culture that was completely different from your own”? student answer should be something like “ In Germany they call Santa Claus, Papa Noel”
